The rainforest on the island of Borneo – the third largest island in the world – is estimated to be around 140 million years old, making it one of the oldest rainforests in the world. Known as Asia’s last great rainforest, it is a mix of lowland and montane rainforest located above 1,000m (3,300ft). The Borneo lowland rainforest in particular is diminishing due to logging, hunting and conversion to commercial land use – so much so that in 2007 the Heart of Borneo Initiative was launched by the WWF to save one of the largest rainforests in the world. The agreement, signed by the governments of Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia, intends to protect a vast tract of rainforest on the island. Like many tropical areas around the world, Borneo’s rainforests are deforested for timber, palm oil, pulp, rubber and minerals. As such, Borneo has lost 30% of its forest in the past 40 years, falling at twice the rate as the rest of the world’s rainforests. Large mammals such as orangutans and elephants are particularly at risk.

Harapan is a beautiful tropical stretch in the province of Jambi, Sumatra, Indonesia. It’s one of the biodiversity hot-spots of the world. It’s also home to many of the world’s threatened wildlife species: the Sumatran Tiger, Orangutan, Asian Elephant, Malayan Sun Bear, and Clouded Leopard. Congo Rainforest: The Congo rainforest is the second largest in the world and covers a total area of 1,780,000 km2. It is found in Central Africa and also has one of the longest rivers running from within it. The rainforest covers a bigger part of Northern Congo. The Congo River is the world’s second largest river by volume, draining an area of 3.7 million square kilometers known as the Congo Basin. Nine countries; Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo, Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia have part of their territory in the Congo Basin. They are conventionally six countries with extensive forest cover in the region, which are generally associated with the Congo rainforest: Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon. The Congo rainforest is also widely recognized for its high levels of biodiversity, characterized with more than 600 tree species and 10,000 animal species. Some of its most famous residents include forest elephants, gorillas, chimpanzees, okapi, and lions.

El Yunque National Forest is a tropical rainforest in northeastern Puerto Rico. From El Portal Visitor Center, a walkway winds through the surrounding treetops. Trails run to La Mina waterfall and Mount Britton, then up to the high-altitude dwarf forest. In the south are ancient petroglyphs, made by the area’s indigenous Taíno people.
