By any measure, Wimberly Media Group has been wildly successful. But running my businesses has never been easy. I’ve spoken about the past challenges we faced as a company – how we became the victim of our own success. As the leader of my organization I had to step up and own our shortcomings. I had to take full responsibility. And I did. But don’t be deceived, running a business is not for the faint of heart. It comes with a heavy responsibility. What made you want to be you own boss? When I was younger I did have an opportunity to have a regular job. I worked as a host at a local restaurant chain and also worked at JCPenny as part of my modeling work with them. But to be honest, I knew very early on that I didn’t want to work for anyone else for the rest of my life. Plain and simple – I wanted to be in charge. Plus I never liked having to wake up early in the morning [laughs].

I wanted to be in total control, juggled too many hats, and didn’t put trust in others. I was overwhelmed. If that wasn’t enough, I then experienced the most crushing blow of my life – my mother died. My mother was my rock, my strength, my foundation. She believed in me and motivated me to chase my dreams no matter what. When my mother passed away I became lost and unfocused. I just didn’t care much about anyone or anything. All of this led to me not fulfilling my obligation to always provide our clients with the best customer experience possible. I take full responsibility and accountability. No one is perfect. I’ve made my mistakes. And today I choose to be open and honest about them. By owning my mistakes, I’ve learned to not run from problems. I’ve learned to be a better communicator. I’ve learned to trust my team and delegate responsibilities.
